Trying to be a Twitter King has its ups and downs (as does working in the
stock market)
So conventionality dictates that in order to be the next JK Rowling (and all us
writer types want that, right?) that you have to have an audience to sell your
writing too. Now I personally am selling a boatload of my writing...to content mills...
for peanuts...sometimes literally (that's what happens when you have write
content for KP). However I want to be able to sell my novel and so have been
growing my Twitter following. I know I've posted on this very topic before
and about how addictive it is but this post is different. This will look at the
pitfalls for those who are in a similar position to myself.
Firstly, and this is a big deal...Twitter will only let you follow about 5000 people before it cuts you off. I'm sure it alludes to this somewhere in some small print but I was unaware of this. I had been bulk following people who were writers or following writers and getting quite a few likes back from doing this. I envisioned me using this technique to get to, I don't know, like a million followers? and probably got one of those coveted shiny blue ticks in the process. Unfortunately I hit that wall hard. I have a gift for melodrama.
Upon research, it transpires that in order to follow more people I need to have more followers. But hang on...how am I supposed to get followers with following other people? Apparently the behaviour I was exhibiting was considered "spammy" uh oh. That's the last thing I want! So I have been slowly removing people that I follow but don't return the favour. Save for a few celebs that I simply must know how they feel (I've stopped following psychic Sally and have taken to just guessing at how she's feeling)
Using a couple of mass delete apps I've whittled down the people I'm following by about 2000. But from here on I'll be more selective on who I follow. And attempt to grow my Twitter following more organically by posting comments that are pertinent and taking advantage of hashtags...of course I'm 34 so first I'm going to have to learn what the hell a hashtag actually does.
Hopefully this will make me seem less "spammy". I'm not a spam bot! Honestly. I'm just a wannabe writer trying to create a following for himself (as is every other writer) hopefully from now I'll do it in a fashion befitting of an author not somebody selling Viagra and Vicodin - however if you are looking to buy these try www.buycheapmeds.com/onlyjoking
